Harold E Mason

Harold Mason grew up in Greencastle, IN. After graduation, he would later join the U.S. Air Force in 1948, and was stationed in St. Louis, MO. He met his wife Dorthea Windey while in St. Louis. Harold married Dorthea on January 26th, 1952. They would have 4 children together; Sherry, Steve, Mark, and Scott.

After Harold's term of service in the air force, he went to Bradley University to learn watch repair and hand engraving. He started his watch repair career in the back of Matese, a hardware store owned by his father-in-law in St. Louis, MO in the late 1950's. Harold, Dorthea, and their daughter Sherry moved back to Greencastle, Indiana. This was the location Harold wanted to open his watch repair shop. Harold opened Mason Jewelers in Greencastle in 1957. He started doing watch work, and saved the profit from each repair until he could purchase a single piece of jewelry. He would continue to do this until he filled his entire shop with jewelry. At this point this would transform Mason Jewelers into what you see today when you visit.

His sons, Steve and Scott showed interest in the family business early on and would be found helping out where they could. As his sons went through the high school years, they were in the shop more and more, and working at this point. Harold noticed the dedication they had for this business and decided that he would open another store to give both of his sons opportunity. He opened a 2nd Mason Jewelers in Plainfield in 1982. Scott would transition to the Plainfield store, and Steve would stay in Greencastle.

In 1998, Mason Jewelers, and his sons had a retirement sale to honor their parents Harold and Dorthea as they were retiring. Scott stated, “when Harold was walking out of the shop the last time, dad was choked up and I could see the tears.” But he looked at me and said, “Scott you did a great job.”

Scott A. Mason

Scott Mason was born in July, 1963 in Greencastle, IN. He grew up in his father's jewelry store and would be found there helping out whenever he could. He started to take a more serious approach with the family business in his high school years. After graduation he went on with his brother Steve Mason to Santa Monica, California for the Gemological Institute of America. He completed the diamond course and diamond grading, as well as jewelry repair. Scott came back to Indiana and began his official career as a jeweler in Plainfield, IN where the 2nd store was opened in 1982.

Scott continued his hard work, and dedication to provide the best quality jewelry, and jewelry repair possible. Scott said, “One thing that I strive for is customer service. Our customers are like family and we love our family.” It's a core value associated with any family operated business, and we provide the best in the industry.

In 1998, we held a retirement sale for the founders Harold and Dorthea Mason. This sale would have such a huge success that it would later be transitioned into the huge anniversary sale we have each and every year. In 2018 we had our biggest anniversary sale celebrating 61 years at our new location in the Plainfield Plaza. “This is the sale of all sales,” Scott said. “Everyone from employees to customers have waited with anticipation for this sale all year.” This special event is more of a celebration of customers that are like family, because that's what we are all about.
